All older motorcycles use ball bearings in their steering heads. One of the best safety upgrades you can make, upgrading to tapered steering head bearings, costs peanuts and is pretty easy to do with very basic tools. As you will see in the details, you must remove your front wheel, forks and steering head.

Whenever you have to pull apart something on the front end, consider what else you can do at the same time, to avoid duplication of labor later. Perhaps you’re just doing the brakes – consider checking your front wheel for true, check the wheel bearings, rebuild your forks and the front brakes – and why not tackle the steering head bearings? By doing this, you can nail down several critical rebuild topics in one swoop!
